Spread The Word
The more people that are aware of the issue, the better our chances are to catch these pests early in Vermont. The earlier we catch them, the better our changes are to stop them. An assortment of outreach materials are available to help spread the key messages:
Know the pests—visit gallery of invaders
Stop the spread, don’t move firewood—Second homeowners and private seasonal campground visitors may not be aware that Vermont’s scenic landscape, that provides peace and tranquility for their vacation, is at risk and that they may be unintentionally introducing these pests into Vermont by transporting firewood or live plants from elsewhere.
Look UP to look out for pests. Report what you find at http://www.vtinvasives.org/tree-pests/report-it
There are many ways to get the word out:
Organize a Tree Tagging Event
Unfortunately, most people cannot identify ash trees and therefore have no idea of what’s at risk until it’s too late. Tree tagging events have been organized in New York, Indiana and other Midwestern states as an effective way to raise awareness about the threat of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). Read more.
Give a talk or host a movie screening
The Forest Pest Overview ppt presentation (with notes!) provides: an overview of the threat of invasive forest pests (what they are, where they come from, how they get here, and what's at stake); how to identify EAB, ALB and HWA; how they are spread; and how community members can help. Feel free to use the presentation as is or adapt it to fit your needs.
Write an article
Firewood facts, short blurbs and an example article can be found on Forests and Parks website.
